ENDING ENVIRONMENTAL INJUSTICE : OUR PLAN FOR EAST GREENSBORO’S LANDFILL
The landfill in East Greensboro—especially sites like Bingham Park—has long been a source of environmental harm, disproportionately affecting Black and low-income communities
Our East Greensboro Landfill Environmental Justice Plan will focus on 4 strategies to address these issues:
Community-Led Remediation: Establish a resident-led task force with environmental and health experts to advocate for full soil removal using the $18M in identified funding—expanding beyond “cap and cover” solutions to complete remediation.
Safe & Equitable Relocation: Ensure toxic materials are not moved to other underserved communities through transparent regional partnerships and sealed containment options that prioritize community consent and environmental justice.
Public Health Priority: Launch comprehensive health screenings and soil/water testing for affected neighborhoods while creating a public dashboard to track remediation progress and community input.
Community Renewal: Transform the remediated site into green space or community assets that honor residents’ resilience and demonstrate how environmental justice can drive economic and cultural revitalization.
This plan is more than a policy—it’s a promise to the residents of East Greensboro that their health and well-being will be our top priority. Environmental justice is not a slogan; it is a commitment to action.
